Red Velvet Puppy Chow
This recipe ties as my favorite with the cookie dough dip when it comes to party appetizers. The fact that I would classify puppy chow and cookie dough dip as an appetizer says a lot about my sugar addiction but that's neither here nor there.
You need this. I will say it again, you need this. It is so insanely addictive but if you serve it around other people, you won't eat as much as you would normally because I promise you'll never get it out of your friends' hands. It's that good.
I actually didn't think the cake mix would change the recipe all that much, but it truly adds so much to it. I love the taste of the plain powdered sugar but dang, adding the cake mix is next level.
What You'll Need
chex cereal
white chocolate
dark chocolate
peanut butter
red velvet cake mix
powdered sugar
red food coloring
Substitutes
One thing I'll mention is that I really wanted to incorporate cream cheese to really give it more of a red velvet flavor because I've seen so many use that. I tried it twice and because it doesn't harden like chocolate does, it made the puppy chow so soft and stale tasting almost immediately, so I do not recommend!
If you'd like do do all white chocolate instead of half and half, you totally can. Same goes for using milk chocolate. It doesn't matter what you use, just personal preference!
Recipe
Red Velvet Puppy Chow
An even more addictive version of our favorite snack/treat! Red velvet cake mix takes this puppy chow to the next level, and adds a hint of festive Valentines or Super Bowl flair! Serve this at your next get together, or just for a late night sweet treat. Eat alone at your own risk, I promise you won't be able to stop!
8 cups chex cereal
½ cup peanut butter
1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup white chocolate chips
1 cup confectioners' sugar
1 cup red velvet cake mix
red food coloring
Melt your peanut butter, white chocolate, and dark chocolate in the microwave in 30 second increments until melted!
Toss your chex mix in peanut butter/chocolate mixture until cereal is fully coated.
Toss chex in powdered sugar, cake mix, and a few drops of red food coloring. Toss quickly so the food coloring disperses amongst the cereal.
Recipe Notes
There is a very small risk in consuming raw flour, but if you are concerned about it, warm your cake mix in the microwave for 1 minute (until it reaches 165 degrees) before using it in this recipe. This is called heat treating. I would suggest letting it cool for 20 minutes after that so that it can cool fully. But the recipe will turn out just the same, it’s just an added step if you need some peace of mind!
